The 12 Jyotirlingas
In Hindu tradition, the Jyotirlingas are sacred shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva. Each is believed to be a place where Shiva manifested as a pillar of light (Jyoti). Visiting these shrines is considered highly auspicious, as they carry immense spiritual power.
1. Somnath – Gujarat.
The first and most revered Jyotirlinga, symbolizing strength and resilience.
2. Mallikarjuna – Andhra Pradesh.
Known as Kailash of the South, representing divine love and liberation.
3. Mahakaleshwar – Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh.
Famous for its Bhasma Aarti, symbolizing time (Kala) and eternity.
4. Omkareshwar – Madhya Pradesh.
Situated on an island shaped like “Om,” representing cosmic energy.
5. Kedarnath – Uttarakhand.
Located in the Himalayas, symbol of devotion and spiritual ascent.
6. Bhimashankar – Maharashtra.
Associated with Lord Shiva’s victory over the demon Tripurasura.
7. Kashi Vishwanath – Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.
The spiritual heart of India, symbol of liberation (Moksha).
8. Trimbakeshwar – Maharashtra.
Source of the holy river Godavari, connected with removing sins.
9. Vaidyanath (Baidyanath) – Jharkhand.
Known as the healer, granting health and freedom from suffering.
10. Nageshwar – Gujarat.
Protector from poison, symbol of fearlessness.
11. Rameshwaram – Tamil Nadu.
Associated with Lord Rama’s worship of Shiva before crossing to Lanka.
12. Grishneshwar – Maharashtra.
The smallest Jyotirlinga, representing humility and divine grace.
